DEFINITION

Under direction of the Director of Communications, supports the development and execution of MAAC's internal and external communications, with an emphasis on content creation for diverse marketing vehicles.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This incumbent is responsible for supporting the planning and implementation of communications, marketing, and public relations strategies to expand and enhance awareness of MAAC's programs, services, impact, and brand. As a member of the communications team, they will implement work plans and strategies to achieve the department's objectives.

The incumbent will research, develop, write, and proofread content for MAAC's digital and printed publications. This role requires advanced English writing skills, knowledge of creative storytelling and the ability to craft a brand narrative, including producing and adapting written content for different audiences and communication channels. Broad knowledge of effective marketing vehicles is required. The incumbent will actively research and implement new approaches that further enhance the organization's internal and external communications for clarity, tone, style, and grammar, ensuring they meet MAAC's high-quality standards and follow the organization's style guide and voice.

The incumbent will support in the planning and execution of organizational events of varying sizes and purposes and will support the tracking of expenses and progress against the departmental budget.

Responsibilities require a broad knowledge of the nonprofit and social service fields with a demonstrated ability to convey its work and impacts. A high value will be placed on the ability to exercise creativity, initiative, and judgment, as well as the acumen to effectively establish and maintain long-term relationships with staff and partners.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans, writes, proofreads, and supports in developing the messaging strategy and copy for MAAC's overall communication strategies to expand and enhance awareness and engagement of programs, services, impact, and brand.
  • Develops and proofreads a variety of writing projects (articles, editorials, informational sheets, media releases, award nominations, internal and external newsletters, white papers, etc.) within the specified deadline and content requirements, to create awareness and engagement of MAAC's work in the community. Conducts any research and interviews necessary to complete projects. Tracks and measures the level of audience engagement and the effectiveness of communications strategies.
  • Plans, develops, creates and tracks digital content for MAAC's website, social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter), blogs, white papers, and other electronic publications as needed. Ensures that updates are posted regularly to positively promote the organization's message and programs to a variety of audiences including donors, community partners and the general public.
  • Supports the management of MAAC's internal communications, including developing content for MAAC's intranet, managing the editorial calendar, and writing articles, interviewing staff and key community stakeholders, and tracking key performance indicators.
  • Supports the planning and execution of MAAC's internal and external events.
  • Supports the data management for the communications department.
  • Supports the planning, scripting, editing and post-production of photo, video, and multimedia projects.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

    • Prepares or reviews a variety of reports and staff documents.
    • Attends and participates in meetings, conferences, and training sessions; provides expertise, information and assistance to management, staff, parents, outside groups and individuals.

      QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

      Knowledge of:
      • Advanced methods and techniques for writing, proofing, and editing content for effective marketing, media, and public relations materials.
      • Advanced methods and techniques of social media management and analytics for diverse platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter).
      • Principles, practices, concepts, and techniques used in developing and executing communications.
      • Effective methods of implementation and techniques related to marketing, event planning and brand management.
      • Basic photography and video editing skills (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere Pro)
      • Industry trends and media practices as they apply to developing content and carrying out communications, public relations, and community engagement.
      • Non-profit functions, operations, associated communications, and marketing issues.
      • Federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and court decisions applicable to assigned areas of responsibility.
        Research methods and analysis techniques.

        Ability to:
        • Generate interest and convey messages through the development of persuasive writing.
        • Prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive correspondence, reports, studies and other written materials.

        • Ensure MAAC's messaging is consistent in all work produced. Navigate PC platforms comfortably, including Microsoft 365 software.

          EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATION

          A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is a:
          • BA/BS Degree in Journalism, English, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field and (3) three years experience in communications, marketing, advertising, or public relations
            OR
            • AA/AS Degree in Journalism, English, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field and (5) five years experience in communications, marketing, advertising, or public relations
            • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and managing social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter), basic knowledge of photo or video editing software.
            • Experience with creating press releases, correspondence, blogs, white papers, statements, website copy, ad campaigns, video text and other documents.
            • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.

              A portfolio of writing samples will be required prior to interview. The portfolio must include:
              • A white paper, article or op-ed
              • Two social media copywriting examples/posts (Twitter and Instagram or Facebook)
              • A press release or media statement
              • An example of web copy or description of a business, service or program (home page, about page etc.)
              • Online newsletter (optional)
              • Blog post (optional)

                HEALTH STATUS

                Must have a physical examination, TB clearance and a drug screen by a doctor/clinic designated by MAAC as well as immunization records for influenza*, pertussis and measles as required by state and federal regulations prior to the first day of employment.

                Physical Demands

                While performing the duties of this class, an employee is regularly required to stand, walk and sit, talk or hear both in person and by telephone, uses hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls, reach with hands and arms. An employee also is regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl, climb or balance and lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

                Mental Demands

                While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret information; analyze and solve problems; observe and interpret people and situations; use basic math; learn and apply new information or skills; work under intensive deadlines and interact with MAAC management, administrators, staff, teachers, parents, family members, children and others encountered in the course of work.

                BACKGROUND CLEARANCE

                All positions are subject to a background/education check, DMV check, NSOR, exclusion and debarment checks prior to hire and periodically throughout employment as required by various funding sources.

                Note: California Start law requires background criminal checks on anyone who works in a licensed childcare facility who is not a client. Must have or obtain a current criminal background check clearance, signed criminal record statement, and signed Acknowledgement to Report Child Abuse form prior to the first day of employment.

                TRANSPORTATION

                Must have and maintain a valid California Driver's License, daily use of a personal, insured vehicle, and have and maintain a motor vehicle driving record acceptable to MAAC's insurance carrier. Incumbents will be enrolled in the California DMV Pull Program.
