POSITION SUMMARY: As a technician, with minimal supervision, the Machine Service Technician 2 - Field is responsible for providing high quality repairs on Caterpillar and allied equipment. The Machine Service Technician 2 - Field will diagnose and troubleshoot engines, powertrains, electrical, and hydraulic systems; experience with cat diagnostic equipment, Cat repair tooling, rigging, and blocking equipment is essential. Due to multiple projects the Machine Service Technician 2 - Field will be assigned, this position requires planning and organization skills with a particular emphasis on controlling job costs. The Machine Service Technician 2 - Field will investigate, analyze, and identify issues in order to make recommendations for the appropriate repairs. Our technicians work with a variety of people, communication skills that include strong interpersonal skills, effective writing, basic computer skills, and ability to respond to the lead technicians/management in a positive, caring, and timely manner is required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: /n 1. Analyze and diagnose equipment malfunctions. /n 2. Remove and install parts, disassemble, and assemble components, and test and adjust assemblies with minimal supervision. /n 3. Perform Caterpillar updates as directed by Caterpillar, Inc. /n 4. Analyze all Caterpillar and allied product equipment systems and components for proper operation based on theory of design. /n 5. Effectively communicate with peers, leads and other staff members. /n 6. Organize a job in a logical and economical sequence. /n 7. Utilize Cat Interact and Servicelink (computer programs) and other online tools as required. /n 8. Order parts through DBS (Dealer Business System). /n 9. Enter your labor time daily (DBS). /n 10. Perform assigned work within the communicated time quoted/flat rated. /n 11. Conduct customer training in proper use of Caterpillar equipment as needed. /n 12. Complete assigned jobs to meet flat rate times with minimal to no rework. /n 13. Write service reports that accurately document diagnosis and repairs performed on a daily basis. /n 14. Attend toolbox meetings as required. /n 15. Adhere to all company policies. /n 16. Follow contamination control and OSHA/MSHA rules and regulations. /n 17. Guide/mentor/train technicians with less expertise in the repairs of Caterpillar machines and systems. /n 18. Perform other duties as assigned. /n /n EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED: /n 1. High school diploma or equivalent /n 2. Prefer to have one of the following. /n - Five to eight (5-8) years of experience in the repair of Caterpillar or other heavy equipment products. /n - Successful completion of Level One Technician program /n /n /n 3. General knowledge of basic hand tools, air tools, precision measuring tools and instruments, laptops, diagnostic software and cranes/rigging equipment. /n 4. Ability to provide accurate information to lead/supervisor for quoting. /n 5. Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment; /n - Manages competing demands; /n - Changes approach or method to best fit the situation; /n - Deals with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events. /n /n /n 6. Must be able to obtain a passing score for the crane qualification test performed by a qualified Hawthorne trainer for this position. /n 7. Ability to work unsupervised efficiently and be part of a team environment. /n 8. Must be able to pass the Lock Out / Tag Out & Forklift certification class provided by a qualified Hawthorne trainer for this position. /n 9. Perform the position with pride in professionalism while following Hawthorne's code of conduct. /n 10. Possess basic computer knowledge and ability to use service software required in position. /n 11. Must have valid California Driver's License with a clean record. /n 12. Shop Requirements: Valid California Class "C" driver's license. /n 13. Field Requirements: Valid California Class "B" driver's license, if assigned vehicle is required. /n 14. Furnish all hand tools required to repair, test and diagnose hydraulic, air, power train, electrical and electronic systems on Caterpillar equipment. - NOTE: Some high dollar value tooling is supplied by Hawthorne. /n /n 15. Contributes to building a positive team spirit; puts success of team above own interests; able to build morale and group commitments to goals and objectives; supports everyone's efforts to succeed. /n /n PHYSICAL DEMANDS: /n 1. Walking and moving about on foot often through uneven terrain. /n 2. Hands/arms operating equipment, hand and power tools. /n 3. Lifting: Up to 50 lbs. daily, frequent exertion. Raises or lowers miscellaneous equipment parts and tools. /n 4. Handling: Works with hands. /n 5. Reaching: Extends hands and arms in any direction. /n 6. Standing: Remains in standing position if required for certain repair or maintenance work. /n 7. Climbing: In and out of equipment. /n 8. Vision: Reads work tickets, parts and service books and operates heavy equipment. /n 9. Talking: Communicates via telecommunications, in writing, and in person. /n 10. Sitting: Sits in equipment and in vehicles. /n 11. Stooping: Bends body downward and forward by bending at knees or waist. /n 12. Hearing: Hears well enough to discern mechanical problems for safety in and around shop and construction sites and to receive communication via telecommunications and in person. /n 13. Laying: Lies in prone position under vehicles and equipment. /n /n ENVIRONMENTAL: /n 1. Noise: Works in conditions with constant or intermittent noise. /n 2. Temperatures/Weather: Works in the field, outside with variations of temperature and weather. /n 3.
