  • This position will be a member of the Neutral Beam group, contributing to the research program on the DIII-D tokamak. Responsibilities include:
  • Learn the fundamental principles of neutral beam ion sources and related complex electronic and mechanical systems, learn to operate them using computerized graphical user interfaces, and assist with monitoring and analysis of telemetry data acquired during operations.
  • Coordinate neutral beam operations through effective communication and interfacing between Beam group operators and research scientists.
  • Design, operate, maintain and upgrade various diagnostic systems using electronic, thermal, optical, and spectrographic equipment.
  • Testing and troubleshooting of electronic and mechanical equipment when required, using standard laboratory test equipment and software analysis methods. Other duties as assigned or required.
    Job Qualifications:Typically requires a bachelors or masters degree in engineering (see more specific details below) or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and two or more years of engineering experience with a bachelors degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

    Must have a general understanding of engineering concepts, principles, and theory with technical experience demonstrating the application of those concepts while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance. Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment and organize work assignments to meet established timetables.

    Good communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required, as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Must be able to work extended hours as required. An EIT (Engineer in Training) certificate is desirable.
    • Typically requires a Masters degree, or two years experience plus a Bachelors degree, in Physics, Engineering Physics or Applied Physics.
    • Must have hands-on experience with laboratory equipment.
    • Must have some programming experience using languages such as C, Visual Basic, Python, and object-oriented languages.
    • The ability to work independently and as part of a team and good interpersonal skills are required, as the position requires significant interaction with various scientists, engineers and technicians.Able to work extended hours and travel as required.
